Psalms 113:1-9
“Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, you his servants; praise the name of the Lord. Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. The Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people. He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord.”
Psalms 113:1-9 NIV
God has a heart for the poor, the barren, the impoverished, the vulnerable, and has mercy on them to raise them up. Again what a great God is this and how worthy of praise.
The more we recognize the goodness of God, the glory of God, the faithfulness of God, the more we will praise Him.
When we see Him working in our lives, even in the smallest of things, it is a natural response to praise Him. We praise Him with thanksgiving for all of the blessings Hecshowers down on us. And there is so much for each of us to be thankful to God. On our worst day, we are truly blessed.
This psalm is from start to finish a hymn of praise about God. It is a call to the people of God to remember who God is and what God has done. Under an arc of the sun’s transit across the sky, earthen landscapes rotate and people go about daily life.
In the ordinary movement of each day we are called to praise God. Some people believe that it is their mission in life to complain. They complain when it is cloudy and rainy, and are then upset when the sun comes out because it is too bright.
The sad fact is that we often join them in their complaining. The Psalmist invites his people to look at the world from a different perspective. He agrees that it isn’t a perfect world. There are still the poor and needy. Instead of focusing on all that is wrong and complaining about it, however, the Psalmist commands the people to look beyond the problems and observe what the Lord is doing.
When we focus on God’s actions it is easy to follow the Psalmist’s directions. Our natural response is to praise the Lord. To help us praise the Lord, the Psalmist reminds us who we are. We are not just presidents and CEO’s, employer or employee, farmers or merchants, housewives or mothers. We are servants of the Lord.
So, the Psalmist is calling God’s people to worship the Lord with their words and their deeds. Our worship is not dependent on our location or situation. At all times we can bless the Lord. The sun shines constantly and its light illuminates every inch of the earth.
The Psalmist is calling for God’s name to be praised everywhere all the time. Imagine the sound such praise would make. The picture is an image of heaven on earth. We are created in His Holy image. May our faithfulness mirror His today. Count your blessings and name them one by one.
God has been and is faithful. Open wide your mouth and proclaim the goodness of the Lord your God on today. We all have a reason to give God praise, glory and honor!!!
