Luke 19:41-44
“When the city came into view, he wept over it. “If you had only recognized this day, and everything that was good for you! But now it’s too late. In the days ahead your enemies are going to bring up their heavy artillery and surround you, pressing in from every side. They’ll smash you and your babies on the pavement. Not one stone will be left intact. All this because you didn’t recognize and welcome God’s personal visit.””
Luke 19:41-44 MSG
What is the greatest tragedy in this world? That the world is blinded and unable to believe in the gospel. This unbelief is seen all throughout the ministry of Jesus, but particularly in His final days. The same people that greet Him at His triumphal entry are the same ones who later that same week cry for Him to be crucified.
These men and women heard the message of Jesus and they knew that He claimed to be the Messiah, yet in their unbelief they rejected Him. It is a sinful and corrupt heart that leads people to reject the gospel. Jesus knew this was true when He wept over the great city of Jerusalem, knowing that these people would reject Him and be judged by God in the destruction of the temple.
Christians of today and all times must remember that the gospel is based on the fact of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection. It is not just another religious theory, but it is the very Word of God. It is only through this message of salvation that anyone has true peace and knowledge of God and His love.
So often, we assume that if an opportunity is presented to us, then we will have many other chances to respond to the same opportunity. However, our experience eventually teaches most of us what God had tried to get us to see much earlier. We are offered but pass up opportunities, and then circumstance change so that those opportunities are never available in quite the same way again.
Jerusalem stood on the brink of a change in its history. Accepting Jesus as the way to peace offered great opportunity. Rejecting Jesus as the way of peace led to the destruction that would follow. Unfortunately, this same rejection plays itself out repeatedly on a much smaller scale in the lives of so many people. They reject the way of the Lord in their youth, or in a time of rebellion, but perhaps think that they can later follow him whenever and however they may choose. While they may eventually come to the Lord, they will waste much time, and they will also forfeit much peace as the consequences of their rebellion and procrastination bring them heartache after heartache.
However, some can have their hearts become so hardened that they never wish to come to the Lord. Let's live and act with great urgency in the lives of those we love and ask God to help us reach them for Jesus so their lives and their eternities will not be squandered on what is not peace!!!
Father thank You for this day and the strength to walk in it. Lord let Your abundant blessings be my friend and family’s portion today. Lord give us wisdom and urgent patience to know how best to share You with those we love but who do not know You as their Lord. Lord we pray You would break our hearts for unreached people. Lord use us today.
Father, we love You. Amen !
