Heart giving

‭‭Mark‬ ‭12‬:‭41‬-‭44‬

“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.””

‭‭Mark‬ ‭12‬:‭41‬-‭44‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Jesus sees into the hearts of people and knows their situations. He sees through the facades. That's why He will do the judging.

On the surface, the rich who give large amounts of money as their offerings appear to be making huge gifts. Their gifts can sometimes gain them notoriety and applause.

However, the folks who give small amounts may actually be giving a lot more because they sacrifice so much more to give the smaller amount. God doesn't judge the gift by its size, but by its sincerity and generosity of heart.

For us, the struggle might not be that we’re poor materially speaking. It might be that we’re so busy with family responsibilities and the pressures of work that we don’t have a lot of time to offer.

It might be that we look at others around us and see how gifted and talented they are. We may feel that we can never compare and that we have nothing to offer.

But God sees the heart, and He knows. He sees our struggles, and He knows the pressures we face. He knows that what might seem like a little thing to others can be a significant sacrifice for us, and He values it when we offer what we have to Him, no matter how little it may seem.

Let’s not miss the lesson itself, dear brothers and sisters. Let’s never feel that our humble abilities or humble resources or humble talents are too small to give to God. Don’t just limit this lesson to money. Expand it to the whole of your life before God.

You may not be able to do the things that others may be able to do. You may not be able to give the kind of gift that others may be able to give. You may not have the talents to offer that someone else may be able to offer. You may not have the energy to serve that others have with which to serve.

But the value of your offering to the Lord isn’t measured by Him in terms of the thing itself that is given. Rather, it’s measured in terms of the heart from which it is given.

Let’s give whatever we have to Him, then. And let’s give our whole selves in the giving of it. And let’s just know that He watches how it is given.  He notices when it is given with true sincerity and humble sacrifice of love for Him, and that He values it in terms of what He knows that it costs us to give.

How much we give, whether of our money, our time, or our talents, is not important. What matters is the generosity with which we give. The one who gives sacrificially of the little he has, has given more than the one who gives abundantly but at little real cost to himself.

Man looks at the externals, but God looks at, and rewards, the heart.

You may feel like you don’t have much to offer, but why not offer what you do have to Him today.

Give a small amount of money to help a good cause, take a few minutes to pray for someone in need, or offer a kind word or a smile to someone who could use some encouragement. And do it for Him out of love and gratitude for all that He has offered so freely for us.

He sees our little offerings and He values them, and the impact can be greater than we’ll ever know.

Let’s truly let our giving to Him be like the giving of that poor widow’s priceless treasure!!!
