John 6:35-40
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.””
John 6:35-40 NIV
Eternal life is not something that we alone desire, it is something that God desires for us. In fact, God is more passionate about giving us eternal life than we are about pursuing it. Therefore, we ought not worry about whether God will grant us this gift. If we love Jesus and feast on His Word, we belong to Him, and He will never drive us away.
But thats the beauty of today’s verses from John, Jesus is always reminding us of who He is and why that matters. Having faith in Jesus requires that we have an active faith. A faith that hears Jesus voice, and then feels the spirit move that faith into action. John’s Gospel is the Gospel of Jesus “I am” statements. I am the vine I am the Way, I am the bread of life.
We then should be a people of “We are.” We are followers of Christ. We are redeemed. We are alive. Jesus himself tells us later in John 16 that in this world you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome this world.
The keynote of John’s Gospel is Love, and God so loved the world that he gave his son. His son Jesus to be the bearer of light in the darkness. But what is life? Is it merely physical or is it spiritual? I, think it is both, and Jesus cared for both. For Jesus, you couldn't have one without the other. If you were fed physically great. But He wanted you to be fed spiritually too.
Real life is relationship with God. A relationship of trust and obedience and love and that relationship is made possible through Christ. Without Jesus there may be existence but not life. Therefore if people need food to live, Jesus is the bread of life. The hunger and restlessness of the human soul in search for God are fed and satisfied in Jesus.
So often, people picture God as a surly old man looking for people who mess up so He can punish them. God's will, however, is that all come to salvation. He doesn't want any person to perish. He wants all to know Jesus and find salvation in Him. Jesus is the way to God.
Jesus is the door to a new and lasting life not a temporary one, whether real or imagined. Jesus is the focus, the hope, and the life behind God's plan. Learning to believe in Jesus is everything. Learning to see Jesus as God's Son is the doorway to forever. We receive a life that outlasts history and the assurance that nothing can ever conquer us once we belong to Jesus. He will raise us up in victory!!!
Father thank You for this day and the incredible free gift of redemption that lasts forever. Lord pour out Your abundant blessings over my friend and family today. Lord please give us a love for the materialistic people in our lives. Lord we need Your Holy Spirit to help us to confront their selfish desires, to correct their misconceptions about salvation, and to challenge them to trust You for eternal life so that they can discover the joy of everlasting security that cannot be lost or taken away. Lord we pray that those of us who know You will seek satisfaction in our relationship with You and not the things of this world. Lord use my friend to be a bold witness of You. Be a blessing.
Father, we love You. Amen !
